I've posted this question in the Mac forum but I'll post it here as well.

I have a US version W5100 Sony TV and everything but movies work using PS3MS. I can browse to the folders containing movies in various formats (avi, mkv, videots, ect.) but all I get is a "nothing to display" message. MP3s work just fine as do JPEGs. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I am running the latest beta on an Intel iMac.

Hello Cnorrick,

Surely several directions to explore...

I have visited the US site of Sony and had a look at the Owner's manual of their KDL-xxW5100 series.
It is written (page 38 / Specifications):
* Input/Output jacks *
- USB: MPEG2, MP3, and JPEG.
- DLNA: MPEG2 (video), LPCM (audio - like WMA), MP3 (audio), and JPEG (photo).
So, that means the DLNA's client of your Bravia W5100 (US) can only read and play in native format the following only one video format: "MPEG2" (when in Europe with the W5500 series can in add play AVCHD and HDV).

Now regarding the PS3MS S/W, it can do at least two things:
- stream media files WITHOUT transcoding (for you "MPGE2"); i.e. direct streaming, and
- stream media files WITH transcoding (for you "all other video formats supported by PS3MS") to MPGE2; i.e. with rendering (the only one video format supported by the US Bravia W5100).

As written in my previous posts, you must absolutly use PS3MS at least v.1.11.350 or above to work properly with the W5100 - W5500 series. You can also read more on this subject by viewing my post on this forum here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2099&start=170

If above is effectively the case, let's see your statement:
" have a US version W5100 Sony TV and everything but movies work using PS3MS. I can browse to the folders containing movies in various formats (avi, mkv, videots, ect.) but all I get is a "nothing to display" message. MP3s work just fine as do JPEGs. Does anyone have any thoughts?"

Your "avi, mkv, videots, ect." video files must be converted to MPG2 by PS3MS to be playable by your Bravia.
Normally this is the case and you should find the converted - transcoded files on your Bravia in folders named #--Transcode--# with several possibilities.

The "nothing to display" message given by your Bravia means the DLNA's client is not finding something to display in "MPEG2" format (W5100). So, you should look at the "Transcoding" folder of PS3MS and see what are the settings there and try to fine tune them, including perhaps the NTSC one (vs PAL in Europe).

Also, Make a "copy & paste" of your PS3MS's "Status" folder content, so we can see more in depth what is happening.

Hope this help.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Joe. It gives me a few ideas

I had the Transcode folder set to Hide so I turned that back on. But when I browse to a movie folder, then the Transcode folder inside it I still get the "no items to display." So now I'm going to transcode a movie using Handbrake to the PS3 setting and see if that will show up and play. If that is the case there must be something I don't have set correctly to make PS3MS do the transcoding. I'll know in about 3 hours when this transcode is done.

What initiates a transcode in PS3MS? Is it just automatic when you browse to a folder through the TV or do I need to do something on the computer side to get it to start transcoding on the fly?

Have you read this thread: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3030?

I did read through that thread but I was unsure about how to apply the "fix" to a Macintosh build of PS3MS. It does look exactly like my problem so it may just work if I knew the steps to apply it.

Have you try change pms.jar and modify .conf file from: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3030#p14755 (for tests only)

Hi,

Joe, thanks for your answer.

I'm using PMS 1.20 (last beta build r356 I found, cause the last final version I found did not detect my TV).

"videos on macbook" = "videos files that are actuallay on the macbook", so we are ok on the goal I'm trying to reach :)

Finally, I can see divx and hd divx on my TV via PMS but I have to select the file in the #transcode# folder in order to do it (generally Its the MEncoder(mp3/undetermined) file ).
Thus, the video seems to be stretched on some divx, how can I avoid the strecth effect?

Have you any idea of how I can read the video directly in the shared folder instead using the transcode folder?

Thanks.

I replaced my pms.jar file with the one you supplied in that post. It did change the icon of the server on the TV to a large green play arrow. It also prevents a new server from showing up on the TV every time I restart PS3MS. Thanks for that! It was getting old having to manually delete servers every time I restarted the server.

I also added the line "DLNAProfileChanges=MPEG_PS_PAL=MPEG_PS_NTSC|MPEG_TS_SD_EU=MPEG_TS_SD_NA|MPEG_TS_SD_EU_ISO=MPEG_TS_SD_NA_ISO" to the end of the Bravio5500.conf file.

None of the above changes allow me to play movies. Did I follow the instructions correctly?

I'm now getting these traces:
