Styled subtitles go "boom"

Postby NaweG » Mon Jun 22, 2009 9:22 pm

Per the problem report template:
1- your computer specs (cpu, memory) and the precise server version you're using
i7 Core 3.2 GhZ, Vista 64 Ultimate SP2, 12 Gigs Ram for the PC - Server version is 1.10.51

2- the network connection you are using for streaming your files (wifi, homeplugs, ethernet 100Mbits, or gigabit)
Host PC is on Ethernet 100 mbps streaming over Wireless G to an XBox 360

3- detailed infos on what's not working
If I have an MKV file with styled subtitles (IOW, embedded with specific size and color info), ffmpeg blows up, and then the file plays on the XBox 360, but without subtitles.

4- if you're transcoding some videos, which engine are you using ? (mencoder, avisynth/mencoder, tsmuxer)
Mencoder since Avisynth did not get installed, and I presumed tsmuxer would not produce compatible output for the Xbox 360

5- a debug.log file excerpt, or you can zip the whole file. this file can be found in the application directory, or if you have UAC and Vista activated, likely found in the Windows temp directory

Portion I suspect is of use:

6- if you are streaming to anything other than a PS3, please mention it
Streaming to an XBox 360, but I suspect this error would occur in either case since it's at the host computer.

I presume it's the styled subtitles that are the issue, but perhaps it's something else ffmpeg didn't care for? Would it help to get a 64-bit version of ffmpeg/menplayer?

Thanks in advance for the help!

yes, a ffmpeg crash prevents the server to fully analyze the video file, hence the problem with the subtitle track not loaded by the mencoder process...
hard to say why ffmpeg is crashing... maybe you can try to replace it with this version: http://ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/sv ... ffmpeg.exe

I'll give that version a try. Don't suppose y'all have a 64 bit version - I know you don't control ffmpeg development, but thought perhaps y'all have compiled a compatible version from the SVN tree. I ask because I'm a little curious as to whether the 32-bit stuff on the 12 gig machine might have "issues" :D

As a further (confusing) data point, I pulled up some of my other styled subtitle files, and they seemed to work fine. I haven't yet pulled up an example of the worst one (Sayonara Zetsubos Sensei, trying to read the TL notes is a game unto itself), but the fact that the others have worked makes me now suspect either a codec or memory issue. But I can't see anything that different in this file from others.

Anyway, will let you know how the alternate ffmpeg works out.

Thanks!

The new version "fixed' things in that I was no longer getting a Windows error, but it still wasn't showing the subtitles. So I looked through the latest log... and then noticed where it said what subtitles it was finding. Evidently this group used "Undetermined" (or und) for their English subtitles. Once I added und (right after eng) to the list to look for, it started working. FWIW...
