Some .MOV files will not transcode

Postby balloothebear » Sun Jun 14, 2009 10:08 pm

Hi,

Before I start with just the one small problem, I must say that I've wasted hours, (if not days) trying to get Tversity working, and when I found PMS I thought all my prayers had been answered - everything just seemed to work!!

However, one small problem.....

I have two types of .mov files, one from my Panasonic digital stills camera, and one from a panasonic video camera.

When I play the files through VLC media player on my PC, the codec details report the
- stills camera video as Jpeg & u8
- video camera as mpgv & mpga

The video camera .mov works fine on the PS3, wheras the stills camera .mov files do absolutely nothing, the screen just goes blank, and eventually the play icon appears, but nothing else.

I've tried various settings, including the test setting, and nothing changes.

I'm using the latest version (Build 339), as well as 1.1.51, the only difference being that 1.1.51 actually shows the first frame of the .mov file, then locks.

Other information:
1- your computer specs (cpu, memory) and the precise server version you're using
AMD64, 4g memory, XP64 Pro, PMS Build 339, and 1.1.51 (See above)
2- the network connection you are using for streaming your files (wifi, homeplugs, ethernet 100Mbits, or gigabit)
Ethernet 100Mbits, wired
3- detailed infos on what's not working
See above
4- if you're transcoding some videos, which engine are you using ? (mencoder, avisynth/mencoder, tsmuxer)
MEncoder, the others seem to do nothing.
5- a debug.log file excerpt, or you can zip the whole file. this file can be found in the application directory, or if you have UAC and Vista activated, likely found in
the Windows temp directory
Attached
6- if you are streaming to anything other than a PS3, please mention it
No.

No problem...
Not working:
"Garden TP - 2.mov" or "Garden TP.mov"
Working:
Not 100% sure, but the filename starts with:
"MOV00?.mov", the question mark being a number.
Many Thanks

Hello again,

I just rebooted the HTTP server from the PS3, then tried to run another .mov file fromthe stills camera.

That failed as with the others, but I noticed the following in the trace window of PMS:

Try forcing PMS to allways transcode mov files (transcoding settings -> common trancode settings -> misc -> force transcode)
mov files can be a mess.

Hi, thanks for the reply...

After putting "mov" in the force transcode field, nothing changed. I get the impression that the PMS is trying to Transcode, it just dies when it tries.

The Trace screen shows two files:
MOV002.mov, this worked fine, and
Worsbrough Brass.............., This failed.

I've added the debug log, as I think this better ties in with the error than the one I sent last night.

Thanks again,
Joe.

it seems mencoder does not like some of your MOVs files (the size of the encoded video is ridiculous)... but the MOV002.mov file seems to be transcoded the right way... don't know if you could upload some of your non working movs in a package on the net, but it could helpful

and just to be clear, .mov is one of the worst supported container in the libavcodec library (ffmpeg, mencoder), unfortunately

Thanks again for the reply...

Not sure what you mean by rediculous MOV size, I'll get round to shrinking them a bit in time, but I have around 5 years worth of the kids!!

I've attached "Hols - 8.MOV". I've just tried to run it, and no joy.

Thanks again,
Joe.

Don't think the attachment actually worked, try again..

Do you have an email address I can use, file is too big, even a small one!

My email should be attached to my account details - email me there, and I'll respond with the attachment.

Cheers,
Joe.

Personally I find transcoding a bit hit and miss. For videos taken with my wife's compact digital camera, I usually manually convert into a format the PS3 understands and bypass the transcoding entirely.

If you're interested, I use mencoder to convert these videos into MPG.
