Stuttering/performance issues on a very powerful system

Postby pooprooster » Thu May 28, 2009 3:35 am

Hi

As mandated by the "[IMPORTANT] - Before reporting a problem" thread:

1- your computer specs (cpu, memory) and the precise server version you're using
2- the network connection you are using for streaming your files (wifi, homeplugs, ethernet 100Mbits, or gigabit)
3- detailed infos on what's not working
4- if you're transcoding some videos, which engine are you using ? (mencoder, avisynth/mencoder, tsmuxer)
5- a debug.log file excerpt, or you can zip the whole file. this file can be found in the application directory, or if you have UAC and Vista activated, likely found in the Windows temp directory

1) The system in question is an HP DL360 G4P 1U rack server. It has two dual-core 3.0GHz Xeon CPUs and 6GB of RAM. It's running VMware ESX, and I have an Ubuntu Server 9.04 virtual machine which has 4 vCPUs and 4GB of RAM dedicated to it.

2) The rack server has a gigabit NIC, and it's plugged into a gigabit switch (as is the PS3).

3) I'm trying to transcode 1080p mkv files. The video playback stutters almost immediately after starting, and is unwatchable. 720p works without problems, for what it's worth.

4) Looks like both MEncoder and ffmpeg. According to debug.log :

[Thread-45] DEBUG 22:07:11.331 Search extension for /home/derrich/secretfilename.mkv
[Thread-45] DEBUG 22:07:11.331 Found 1! net.pms.formats.MKV

I've attached the debug.log in a zip file, so hopefully someone could help shed some light on this.

Since the Ubuntu server is running under VMware ESX, I was able to check out the CPU/memory usage in real-time, and it doesn't look like I'm coming anywhere close to running out of power. The CPU usage only got to about 45%, and none of the "you're running low on memory" alarms were triggered. So it doesn't appear to be a resource issue (which was my first guess, since this is a VM and all).

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be very appreciative. Getting 1080p content streaming to the PS3 would be fabulous.

it's a multicore related issue... on linux, default mplayer and mencoder builds are NOT multicore capable... so that's why you got only 40% cpu usage when transcoding a video... you need to build yourself a multicore build of mencoder

Nope. I solve my problem. Disabled Wireless on PS3, ran ethernet cable to router and 1080p vids now play smoothly.

I used to have the same problem with 1080p transcoding on a powerful laptop (desktop replacement by all means)
Ensure that multicore support is enabled. Also, make sure that your power settings (if you're running a laptop) are set to high performance. Do not stream over wireless even with a wireless N router / network card... hardwired cat6 seems to do the trick just fine for me.
With this setup I recently managed to transcode my first 1080p film from beginning to end with no stuttering whatsoever. I'm quite happy with the results!

Thanks for the tip!

I had some trouble getting everything going on an Ubuntu Server 9.04 install, but since the directions are intended for 8.04, I wasn't too surprised. I'll try it again on an 8.04 install and see how far I get.
