more stuttering

Postby mortis » Thu May 07, 2009 7:38 pm

Hi folks!

I've been reading quite a few posts on this forum and tried a lot of different settings to get my streaming to work properly.
Everything works well except for 1080p streaming. It seems the transcoding is not able to fill my buffer before its empty and
the video starts stuttering.

Here's my setup :
Hardware --->
Sun Ultra 24 Workstation
QuadCore 2,4Ghz CPU
4 gigs ram
Gigabit network (full duplex in both ends)

Software --->
Ubuntu 9.04
PS3 Media Server 1.10.5
MEncoder SVN-r29021-4.3.2

Here's my CURRENT ps3mediaserver settings (I've tried a lot of different stuff):

thumbnails = true
mencoder_ass = true
network_interface = eth0
folders = \/raid
mencoder_sublangs = nor,eng,fre,jpn,ger
mencoder_audiolangs = eng,fre,jpn,ger
maxvideobuffer = 600
usecache = true
nbcores = 4
audiochannels = 6
mencoder_encode = keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=2
audiobitrate = 640
forcetranscode = mkv

When I'm watching htop (a prettier top) I can see that sometimes one of the core reaches almost 100%, but the others are fine.
Even if i set a lower quality, like the one best fit for wifi ....it still starts to stutter (just takes a bit longer before it does so).
I never run out of memory, so there's no swapping going on.

I dont really see any errors in my debug.log so I'm not sure if there's a point of posting it at all?

From what I can understand, my setup is strong enough to handle this transcoding, but it sure doesnt, so I can only
imagine that I failed at config something right.

Any ideas, input?
Thanks in advance!

Make sure you compile the mencoder/ffmpeg with mutlithreading support....

thanks for the reply.
mencoder is compiled with runtime cpu detection.

seems to me its running on all 4 cores

this is the command that ps3 media server makes :
mencoder -ss 0 -quiet movie.mkv -quiet -quiet -oac lavc -of mpeg -lavfopts format=asf -mpegopts format=mpeg2:muxrate=500000:vbuf_size=1194:abuf_size=64 -ovc lavc -channels 6 -lavcopts threads=4 -lavdopts debug=0:threads=4 -lavcopts autoaspect=1:vcodec=mpeg2video:acodec=ac3:abitrate=640:threads=4:keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=2 -ass -nofontconfig -subcp cp1252 -subfont /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf -ass-color ffffff00 -ass-border-color 00000000 -ass-font-scale 1.0 -ass-force-style FontName=Arial,Outline=1,Shadow=1,MarginV=10 -quiet -quiet -sid 1 -quiet -quiet -ofps 24000/1001 -quiet -quiet -af lavcresample=48000 -srate 48000 -o /tmp/javaps3media/mencoder1241724746461

maybe, but keep in mind that multicore H264 decoding is NOT included in the official mplayer repo....

sadly I still havent managed to get it working....
I've tried all the tips I've found about compiling mencoder with h264 decoding support, but
either they dont work ...or they fail to compile.
If someone out there was able to make it work, feel free to share exactly how.
If someone wanna make a .deb package, feel free to share it.
If someone can explain to me how they managed to compile it successfully ...
i'll even make a deb package and put a link to it here.
