playback fails when streaming files from ext4 partiton

hi am tring to work out why playback of mkv fails when streaming files from ext4 partiton accessed from windows 8.1

system is dual boot win 8.1 ubuntu 14.04

the ext4 partiton is my home directory of a ubuntu 14.04 lts instalation

psm is running from windows

ps3 media server version PS3 Media Server 1.90.1

build number 3a4304c72 2013-08-17

playing back on samsung smart tv

i should add that playback normally is fine when running psm from ubuntu to the same tv

also this is my first time on any forum if there are any logs i should have posted please let me know
