Best Container Format for PS3MS

Postby knicknak » Wed Apr 15, 2009 1:55 am

Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out which container performs best with PS3 Media Server in regards to startup time and fast forwarding / rewinding.

I want to put H.264 and AC-3 (5.1) inside it and avoid transcoding when streaming. Does on the fly remuxing perform better than on the fly transcoding or are both "bad" for seeking?

Is M2TS better than MKV?

Can selectable subtitiles (not hardcoded into the video) work with streaming?

Is DivX the only format that supports selctable subtitles for streaming (on the PS3)?

For True HD (7.1) audio the only way to play it on the PS3 is with AVCHD / BlueRay (TrueHD cannot be streamed) correct?

Both are bad (imho), remuxing is better because it need less CPU power to perform, so its faster. People with very fast CPU might consider it usable.. (I dont ;) , I use "goto". )

MKV always needs re-muxing/transcoding. M2TS is what PMS transcodes MKV into before streaming to PS3.

Yes and Yes...

OK so is the following accurate? (assuming you prefer H.264 over DivX)

If you want to stream your video using ps3 media server and avoid transcoding:

If you want selectable subtitles DivX is your format.
Otherwise,
If your video has TrueHD audio remux the audio into LPCM and use M2TS
Else If your video has 5.1 AC-3 audio, use M2TS
Else If your video has 2 channel audio, use MP4

If you don't mind using USB HD or Thumbdive then:
If your video has TrueHD audio or 5.1 AC-3 audio with or without subtitles, then use AVCHD
Else If your video has 2 channel audio with selectable subtitles, use DivX
Else If your video has 2 channel audio without subtitles, use MP4

One more question, is there any reason to prefer mp4 for video that has 2 channel audio instead of m2ts?
