704x480 Aspect ratio being shown incorrectly on 42" screen

Postby WebCideR » Fri Jan 23, 2009 5:10 pm

First i want to say thx for this awesome media server i have been looking for a solution like this for almost a year.

Alright now to the question i got some mkv. which is bugging me because the chop of the side of the screen.
I figured out the reason this is are because of the Aspect Ratio being a bit different than the others i watched.
I noticed every .mkv i have with this Aspect ratio does the same.

Information:

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 704x480 (853:480) 23.98fps [Video]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch [Audio]
Subtitle: Advanced SubStation Alpha [Subtitle]

This happens if i play in Mencoder also Avissynth - Mencoder and i am suspecting this is because of the odd Aspect Ratio
so is there away to resize or tell how to correct the aspect ratio ?

Ohh yeah also the Subtitles are a bit wicked out of the screen and so on.

This is actually the only thing bogging me right now all other files plays really well that i tried and i am so amazed by this program so far.

I dont really get "how" the aspect ratio is wrong...
Is the picture stretched ? do you have black bars ? or is parts of the picture outside the frame of the TV ?

704x480 sounds like the normal resolution from a NTSC DVD. So this could be normal 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio.

Edit:
853x480 = 16:9 so I'm guessing this is ripped straight from DVD but it has anamorphic picture.

Yes some of the movie picture are out of the screen and it does not help to use the zoom functions as it just mess up the way the original aspect ratio should be.

And you are correct it is a mvk file which has the Anamorphic view 16:9 it should not have any problem what so ever to be showed.

it seems mencoder isn't perfect for rescale anamorphic video
you can force the scaler but it's not an elegant solution
a more elegant one would be to tune the rescale in the expert settings panel. add something like this:

width == 704 && height == 480 :: -vf scale=853,480

that should work until a better automatic solution is found

When i pasted this code exactly as you wrote it in Expert codec parameters, the PS3 refused to play the files which had those aspect ratios.
When i looked at the Tracer it had written this:

[Thread-4395] TRACE 17:39:47.745 Starting transcode of Test 1.mkv
[win32/mencoder.exe] TRACE 17:39:48.423 Process D:\Program Files (x86)\PS3 Media Server\win32\mencoder.exe has a return code of 1! Maybe an error occured... check the log file

when i checked log file.

I didn't found any useful information i must say and my log file is quite big, so its hard to spot where i might need to look.

Not to sure about the first bit, but the last bit should be -vf scale=853:480 (with a colon instead of a comma)
