was working, now not. what changed?

Postby askingonequestion » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:21 am

i've been using PS3 media server for some time now. i had used it with my xbox 360 for years without any problems. a month ago i purchased a western digital "WDTV Live" streamy set-top box. this box is capble of browsing files on my computer, however, it could also recognize the PS3 media server (as a "media server") and that was more covnenient. everything worked fine.

then sunday night i went to the bar.

i went to the bar to play bar trivia. when i got home, PS3 media server no longer works.

rather, neither my xbox or my WDTV recognize the PS3 media server. the media server appears to be running fine on my PC. both my xbox and my WDTV can recognize my PC and browse files. but somewhere, somehow, the PS3 media server is not being detected by the WDTV or xbox.

there is a router involved. it's netgear wireless, but everything involved is wired.

things i've tried so far:
-uninstalling avast! antivirus (had read new version could cause problems?)
-installed AVG antivirus (did not install firewall)
-ran "wrapper.exe" in the ps3 media folder, updating java, ensuring everything is run as an administrator
-attempted to set firewall rules/open ports manually (didn't really know what i was doing; following online instructions)
-forcing IP information in the "general" tab on the PS3 media server itself

anyway, nothing works. but here's the point --- SOMETHING changed, because for 18 months or so PS3MS has run flawlessly. then one night i came home and avast! upgraded and java updated and now it doesn't work. what changed?

(it should also be noted that AVG found 4 "threats" on my PC. i saved the log but i haven't read it yet. i'll do that now...)

here are the contents of the debug log. initially i had written this off as a problem outside the scope of PS3 media servier (i.e. ports being blocked by router, windows firewall, etc.) but i never looked too deply into this:

this is the log as-running right now. as for "recreating the error", PS3MS reports no errors (superficially, i should say).

Since there was an Avast update, try the following regarding the Auto Sandbox - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&p=32731#pms-pms_faq_connectivity_firewall

am i to assume that there is nothing in the log that appeared to be amiss?

i uninstalled avast! anti-virus and switched to AVG (specifically because ps3 media server stopped working).

is there a similar setting in AVG i should look for? if there is, i haven't found it yet.

meanwhile, based off a tip i found online, i've unisntalled the newest version of java and installed (after a length yelling match with oracle's website) java "7u3" which, i've heard, is more compatible with PS3MS.

it fixed nothing.

ALLLLLLLLLRIGHT!

we've narrowed down a cause. now for the remedy.

i have added rules and exceptions to windows firewall with no avail. it wasn't until fully disabling windows firewall that the PS3MS was FINALLY detected by my WDTV.

thus, windows (7) firewall is preventing PS3MS from being detected by my streaming boxes. now the question becomes: what changed in my windows firewall? what do i need to fix? here is a short list of i've done thus far (aka a list of what i can remember):

1. "allow a program to communicate through the firewall" PS3MS was deselected. i checked the box for PS3 Media Server to allow it to communicate through the firewall, selecting both private and public networks. (no effect)

2. "firewall/advanced settings" i've attempted to create inbound and outbound rules for PS3 media server on ports 5000 and 5001 (no effect)

3. "network settings/change advanced settings" (different menu) i've ensured that media sharing is enabled. (no effect)
3a. network discovery, file & print sharing etc. all enabled for my home (private) network. for public networks, file & print sharing and network discovery are disabled it should be noted that everything is on my private network, and no "public networks" are detected at my PC (thus, my WDTV and xbox are not on a public network)

and that's all i know. there is a very tempting option in the windows firewall dialog box that says "restore defaults". i really want to just press that and hope that it resets everything to square-one and PS3 will be operating again as it has before...

All known fixes for connection problems are in the FAQ, and based on your debug.log, you're in the "After UDP Broadcast" section, which starts with the link I provided.
Since you've already started going down the troubleshooting path I would recommend (disabling firewalls one by one until it works), I think restoring defaults on the Windows Firewall might be the best thing to do if you're not able to diagnose each individual firewall rule (it's very easy to create conflicting rules). After restoring defaults, you may need to 1) allow javaw.exe, and 2) allow connections to your WDTV.
If you are still having issues after that, follow the rest of the FAQ post - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&p=32731#p34933

Note: once you get it working again, I'd recommend re-updating Java, as there have been numerous security fixes since 7u3. I'm running 1.7.0_45 without issues.

first of all, i would like to thank you as well as other contributors to this board for the help. i'd been googling and reading for days before posting my specific problem, and i had tried many of the remedies listed, although i had not tried every single one of them.

but i fixed it last night, and here's what happened:
after reinstalling java 7u3 (with no effect) and then observing the behavior when disabling the firewall (with positive effect) i dug deeper into my firewall settings, specifically the "advanced" inbound and outbound rules.

although i had created rules allowing PS3MS access through the firewall, it was java which was apparently being blocked. i noticed that there were 6-10 "inbound" rules for java. checking the properties of each instance, many of them pointed to different applications (some in the PS3MS directory, some in java's install directory). of these 6-10 rules, 3-4 of them were disabled. rather i should say that the rules were enabled, but the rule was set to "block".

what i did last night was to set all of those rules to "allow". problem solved.

NOW as for the cause of acute windows firewall changes, well that remains a mystery for another day.

now i can go back to using this wonderful program that allows me to stream all of my favorite videos from my PC to my television!

SUMMARY: PS3 Media Server had access through my firewall, but java did not have complete access through my firewall. setting rules to allow java through the firewall allowed PS3MS to be detected by my set top boxes.

Hi , Just came across your psm issue with firewall. I think it helped me out as i was having what i think was same issue. Thanks for that. Just wondering if perhaps you have any idea why is that every time i switch off my ps and then back on again i do not have the ps showing up under the video tab. I always have to go to the PC and click on the PS icon in the bottom corner of my desk top, select main panel, go to status, and click on reset server to get the green tick. How can i have it set up so that it will show up automatically when switching on the tv and PS.
Even worse when i power down the PC. When its rebooted, i lose every thing to do with PS. Takes ages to reset and get the media server to work. Thats when i found your remedy on the firewall issue. So hopefully that was the problem with that.
thanks sempei58
