Can't find PS3

Postby joolz » Sun Sep 08, 2013 10:17 pm

I would really appreciate any help offered as I've been working on this for several weeks now...

I had a successful pairing between my iMac and my PS3 which were both hard wired to the same router (Telus Actiontec V1000H). These were from different ethernet wall jacks in the house on 2 different floors. The Actiontec router is located on the basement floor and was giving a poor wifi signal for other devices so I hooked up a D-link (DIR-625) to the main floor ethernet and connected the iMac (media file computer) to the LAN out of the D-link. Since this time my PS3 can no longer find the media server. I have forced the IP address of the Mac on General Configuration page of the PS3 media server main panel. I have turned off all firewalls and enabled all UPnP (PS3 says UPnP is enabled). I suspect its something to do with the following quote however this is where it gets a little over my head. If anyone could offer laymen help that would be so helpful!!

Your server and device are on different subnets:
Per the DLNA protocol (which uses UDP broadcast packets), the server and device must be on the same subnet. The easiest way to check is if you can ping the device from the server (successful ping = on same subnet). This issue should only really happen if you have multiple routers or managed switches in your network (in which case you'll need to bridge your routers together). If you only have a single router/switch, then you incorrectly set a manual IP address on at least one of your devices leading to a subnet mismatch

Thanks.

Re: PS3 Media Server Tutorial/FAQ

Just to add...the status page of the main panel shows a check mark showing connected, but PS3 doesn't find any media server. Here is my log

a) Please don't post in the FAQ.
b) Configuring a functioning multi-router home network is outside the scope of this forum. You'll get better support by searching the Google.
c) It looks like you're forcing the incorrect IP address (at least based on the PS3 renderer found message in the log). Follow the FAQ - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&p=32731#p34933
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for posting in the wrong place. Regarding a multi-router home network, I might add that the network is functioning correctly in every other way except for finding the PS3 on the server. Internet connection is working via wired connection of DSL modem > PS3 and via DSL ethernet > Dlink router > iMac at the server.

I went back to my old set up without the Dlink and it somehow assigned a new IP to the iMac (192.168.1.71). It is currently connected and finding the media server. If I try again with the Dlink is this the IP that should be entered at 'Force IP of the server'?

As the FAQ states (with emphasis added):
FAQ wrote:Clear the setting or force the correct IP address (the IP address of the server)
Note: you should only have to the force IP if you've assigned multiple IPs to a single NIC

It doesn't sound like you've done any static IP configuration, let alone multiple IP addresses on one NIC, so you shouldn't be forcing an IP address.

Problem solved! I needed to input the ethernet into the LAN port not the WAN as a usual router setup. Then out from another LAN port into the computer. Now I'm set up with ONE network with TWO routers as opposed to TWO separate networks that were not communicating with each other. And yes as you said, no forcing IP necessary. Thanks for your help.
