HD videos plays better on 360 than PS3?!?

Postby Bassquake » Sun Apr 28, 2013 11:44 am

I have the ps3 media server running on a WHS server which is attached to a bridged router over wifi. The ps3 and 360 is attached to the other router in the other room.

When I play hd mkv to the 360, it stutters about once every few seconds, on the ps3, it stutters constantly and is far worse speed than 360.

Why is it doing this? Theyre both attached to same router. The PSM is using the ps3 renderer. Ive been trying to get 1080 videos to play over my N speed wifi. I have a feeling the router is throttling but as far as I can tell all those options are off. Im using DD-WRT on the routers (Dlink DIR-615).

Setting bandwidth on the PSM doesnt make any difference.

Any help appreciated thanks.

FAQ - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=30#p42818
Note - the PS3's wifi NIC is only wireless G, and it's a terrible one at that.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Im not using the PS3's wifi. Both the 360 and PS3 are wired to the router. Will check out that FAQ thanks.

An update:

I traced the non-transcoded video files stuttering of 1080p videos down to the routers. Took a whole day to find out!! There was a bug in the dd-wrt which didn't let it use N speed. Would never go above 22Mbps. I updated the firmware, fiddled some settings to use NG Mixed and 40Hz upper and now get 150Mbps N speeds. Nice! I can now stream non-transcoded 1080p videos easily such as 30Mbps native mp4 h264.

But I still get exactly the same stuttering with transcoded 1080p files though. Both with wifi and wired so its probably my WHS (v1) Dell SX280 server. Its a P4 3Hz which is probably not enough. Doesn't really explain why the 360 is still playing better than the PS3, oh well.

Transcoding to:
  • PS3 --> MPEG2
  • XBOX --> WMV
Size of bitrate for transcoded video:
  • WMV < MPEG2
If CPU is weak, your buffer is empty in PMS GUI. If CPU is OK, buffer is not empty but if it still stutter, problem is network.
150Mbit is theoretical! In reality you can expect half speed.
Transcoded 1080p MKV file to MPEG2 can easily have 150Mbit/s so your 70Mbit WIFI is not enough when MPEG2 is used. Try to reduce final quality or set bandwidth limit in GUI (or in renderer.conf)
