ps3 media server 1.72 vs 1.52 on windows 7 64bit

Postby ps3medserver » Sun Mar 31, 2013 7:23 am

I will try to be as thorough as possible.

I work in IT, so I know a lot about troubleshooting.

I had PMS version 1.52 on my HP touchsmart desktop (like an imac).
The touchsmart was back at HP for service, so I needed a new PC.

Problem:
PMS version 1.7.2 - video playing is terrible, lots of hangups, CPU gets really high, PMS cache is always 100% (setup at 600, from 400)
(tried AVI, MKV, MP4, also with stereo and AC3 5.1)

solution:
PMS version 1.5.2.
I removed PSM 1.7.2, then installed PMS 1.5.2.
CPU utilization is way low
PMS cache is zero most of the time, hardly going over 100 (max is 400)
no hangups, video playback is totally smooth (tried AVI, MKV, MP4, also with stereo and AC3 5.1)

first setup:
I bought a used PC for my dedicated media server. It's a Dell Optiplex 960.
It has Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0ghz, 6gb RAM, 1.5tb HD, a pci-e dedicated video card ati radeon 6350, and intel 1gb ethernet port
After the OS all setup, I installed PMS 1.7.2 - latest release on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
some weird reason, javaw32bit.exe was always around 25% or more.
memory was used less than 3.5gb
network traffic showed zero byte transferred when video playback hung or non responsive on my PS3
the list of movies on my hard disk only showed 30% (i restarted PMS, rebooted both the PC and the PS3)
always problematic...

second setup:
I thought that maybe I needed to upgrade my CPU + memory, SO I picked up a Core 2 Quard Q9550 and 4gb DDR2 RAM from craigslist.
Now, the Dell Optiplex 960 has a quad core CPUs and 8gb RAM
I even changed the network cable
PMS version is still 1.7.2
same problem...

third setup:
I removed PMS 1.7.2
I downloaded PMS 1.5.2, and installed it.
everything is working normally.
The list of my movies is 100%, always
CPU util is low, javaw32.exe is less than 1% in CPU util
PMS shows zero cache utilization
network traffic shows constant, no zero transfer

I am stumped!!!
Is version 1.7.2 not good for me?
Why version 1.5.2 is working so well for my Dell Optiplex 960?

I had used PMS before, versino 1.3, then 1.5x.
I will not change my setup for a long long time....

thank you

the old mencoder used for transcoding used less cpu but unfortunately it also couldnt read headers that were stripped plus the quality was alot less then the new one. this is why cpu utilization is higher as with everything we got faster cpus and the programs got more demanding. i can suggest making a change to mpeg2 quality in common transcode settings tab, set it to 1-1-2 this was the default before it was changed to 5-1-2 in later builds which uses more cpu but the network requires less. with 1-1-2 it will reduce cpu load. i actually use 1-1-2 still since my cpu is quite low being run off a server but im able to transcode 720p without any issues. imo 1-1-2 should of stayed on the list as a legacy option it was used as a default for many years but then got removed. ive had nothing but issues with 5-1-2 im sure im not the only one.

Also try picking the TsMuxeR option from the #Transcode# folder (or changing the engine priority). The auto-remux option was removed from PMS due to issues with TsMuxer, but if your files work with it, use it.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Thanks for the tips...
You guys are great.

I will try 1.7.2 again with the recommended settings above.

I'll keep you updated later on.
