Can I connect my PS3 to my laptop without a router?

Can I just connect my PS3 to my laptop with an UTP cable without a router and have a working PMS? I have a router, but it's too far away and the streaming is usually laggy after a couple minutes (sometimes there's no problem at all even if I stream an mp4 video with subtitles, which as far as I know supposed to be more "slower" because of transcoding or rendering or something like that, but sometimes even an avi video without subtitles are unwatchable).
I'd just give it a try, but I don't have a long enough cable, and I don't want to buy one if it wouldn't work.
