PMS on WHS

Postby nolt » Thu Jan 22, 2009 9:47 pm

Hey I know there are forums for Windows Home Server and there are actually PMS threads on one or two of those forums.
But Im wondering if anyone here has PMS running to their satisfaction on WHS.

Currently I actually have the PMS software running on my personal XP machine... but all of my media is on the WHS box. I just pointed the media library to share folders on the WHS box.

I couldnt get PMS to work well at all on my WHS box (p4 3.2 northwood/ 2gb) with regards to playing anything other than AVIs. If I played video (mkv for example) directly off the box it would play without stuttering but with no sound. If i navigated into the transcode folder and played one of the options there then it would play the video with the sound but it would stutter. This is with near 720 resolution video.
Im not entirely sure what any of this means.

With PMS on my XP machine (quad core/4gb) it seems to transcode fine with sound. Like others have stated it will not ff/rr at anything greater than 1.5X.

Bandwidth is not an issue with me (im guessing) as im all wired in gigabit.

There seems to be some problems with installing some of the components (avisynth?) on the WHS box.

Does anyone has any comment with regards to a P4 3.2 northwood with 2gig ram and transcoding 720p x264? Would it be expected to struggle? Would the periodic WHS storage balancing impact performance?

Any comment at all is welcome. (Even flames =] )

ok to reply to myself ive gotten the avisynth installed and for whatever reason MEncoder seems to be working properly.

720 video will play... there it intermittent stuttering.

ive convinced myself that my WHS box itself (hardware) is limiting me. the p4 is limiting enough but i also just realized that that particular box only has *gasp!* 1 gig of ram in it. i could have sworn it had 2.

im guessing another gig of memory is in order at least.

I am using PMS on WHS and am pretty happy with it, almost all of my video media are Xvid files created by AutoGK (between 1-3 GB in size) and that works well over 100 MB wired network PS3 and WHS are connected with using default configuration. all i have done is added WHS shared folders to the list PMS is aware of and installed it as a service . WHS is an older AMD X2 3800 (2 Ghz) using 2 GB RAM

thanks for the reply simas.

have you tried any x264/mkv files at around 720 res? if so do you have stuttering or hanging problems?

ive had no problem with xvid files in avi containers. none at all. in fact twonky has been just dandy for that.
my quest for HD x264 support (and FLAC) brought me to find PMS. no problems with AVIs in PMS either.

x264/mkv 720 files seem to play ok when i run PMS on my regular XP box (Q6600 quad w/4gb mem) and directed it to the media on the WHS box.... but when PMS is run on the WHS box it seriously struggles.

my processor is a little bit older/weaker than yours on the WHS box. im wondering throwing another gig of ram in the thing will give it enough of a boost to stream these files or if i just need to suck it up and build another server. like most people i built the server with an old box but all the drives are new.

First off I want to thank the developer for this awesome app. It's the best media server for the PS3 hands-down. I would be very much interested in seeing it as an add-in for Windows Home Server. I have tried running it as a service and it has many problems. My PS3's can never find it when it's running as a service. I have read all the threads about these issues and my router is configured correctly, but I can't get it to work as a service. So instead I just run the application on my Windows Home Server box, but this requires me to remote desktop to it and be logged into that account on the server. It would be really awesome to have this as an add-in. Any plans for this?

I'm also having problem running PMS as a service on my HP EX470 WHS. It seems to restart every time the PS3 does a search for it. PMS would work if I run it manually so it is not server or connection issue.

Hi - I'm a happy WHS user too and would like to try out the PS3 server .. I cant figure out if it's even supported = built to work on the WHS / Win 2003 platform ..

If not then do you know if thats in the plans..are we going to get it as an add-in or something?

Cheers

I've just setup a WHS server, installed PMS, configured, then added the service. It shows fine in Services. From what I've read you simply need to add both PMS and Wrapper.exe (found in PMS subfolders) to the Firewall and you're golden.

What I'm not clear about is if you make GUI changes by opening the app via the Start menu if it applies to what's running as a Service.

I'll test myself shortly and post my results. If it works I'll try to draft a concise step-by-step.

If it's running as a service, then configuration changes won't apply until the service is restarted (not just the "HTTP Restart" button in the PMS GUI).
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

I'm half asleep and encountered a Java update issue so hopefully this is the steps I would have normally taken.

* Install PMS
* Run PMS
* Configure Navigation/Share Settings as necessary
* Configure Transcoding Settings as necessary
* Click Install as Windows Service on the General Configuration tab
* Click QUIT to close PMS
* Open Services
* Right-click SSDP Discovery and choose Properties, make sure Startup Type is set to Automatic, and click Start if the service is currently stopped
* Right-click PMS Media Server and choose Properties, click Log On, uncheck Allow Service to interact with desktop, return to General tab, make sure Startup Type is set to Automatic, and click Start if the service is currently stopped
* Hopefully you don't get an error during service startup (when Java is not installed you will, as I found out during my Java update issue)

That's all I believe I did to get the service running properly.

As reported here, to make settings changes, simply stop the service, open PMS via Start menu, make any configuration changes necessary, quit the GUI, then restart the service.

Worked great, played the Killer and Big Buck Bunny files without an issue. Server is running a Q6600 overclocked slightly to 2.8GHz, 4GB 1066 RAM, WD black primary drive, (tomorrow will have two 1TB WD green drives added), gigabit LAN.
