Help with big MKV

Im having trouble playing big mkv files(40g).My ps3 is plug into the router but my pc,upstairs,its on wifi.Video is very lagy and jumps ahead.I dont want to convert it in avi or else,dont want to loose quality and changing the name extension in avi instead of mkv dont work.
