Subtitles appearing randomly when NOT streaming subtitles

Has anyone ever seen this before? Been using PMS for a few years now. Lately I have been seeing subtitles on an audio stream only (without subtitles) ONLY when what appears to be the end of a chapter of a movie. Otherwise the subtitles are missing like I would expect. Sort of odd. At first I thought they were appearing randomly (and infrequently) and I think I have at least narrowed it down to chapter changes. Is there a setting for this? Anybody have any insight?
