PMS disappears from PS3/vice versa

Postby jayrpca » Sat Jan 05, 2013 2:35 am

I've used PMS for years without a single problem until today. It was working this morning even. This afternoon I did a normal reboot of my PC, and since then PMS will not show up on my PS3, and on the PC PMS can't detect the PS3 as a media renderer. After a few minutes it recognizes WMP, but not the PS3. I've tried every fix I can find in the FAQ with zero luck. Maybe someone here will know what is going on?

There are a lot of reports of the PS3 not showing up lately. :(
I have noticed the exact same thing happening on my development environment, so I added the following line to "logback.xml":

Code: Select all
<logger name="net.pms.network.UPNPHelper" level="ALL" />

What I noticed was that there was no network traffic from the PS3 *at all*.

I have other UPnP devices and they all seemed to be communicating with PMS just fine.
They also responded to the PMS broadcasts.

But not the PS3!
It never showed in the log. The PS3 did have a proper internet connection at the time and was signed in on PSN. I tried "Find media servers" on the PS3 and I also waited for PMS broadcasts, to no result.

The PMS <--> PS3 connection had worked fine earlier that day, and it worked fine later that day.

In short: I cannot explain why the PS3 did not communicate with PMS.
But I do know PMS was listening and sending broadcasts just fine; the PS3 just didn't send anything! :cry:

A little followup on this:

Looks like PMS isn't the only software package having this problem. It appears network routers or switches can filter out the PS3's SSDP search packets, so they never reach the computer where PMS runs. That explains the missing M-SEARCH messages in the trace log.

I never had these problems until I changed the router and started using my PS3 wireless, I may rewire it again and see if that helps.

Funny thing: often when I fire up the AirPlayer app on the iPad it does appear on PMS (via a similar wireless connection) and a second later the PS3 also appears... :shock:
