Got worse after the clean install, and PMS seemed unstable as well. More searching lead me to Universal Media Server (UMS) and I installed that, and this MKV at least runs fine.

Hmmm. Thanks for the UMS tip augey. I'll give it a shot. Please report back when you've put UMS through it's paces. FYI, I also found this tidbit:

this should fix ure issue just increase the java heap size like the guide says.

Thx. Prior to switching to UMS, I totally uninstalled PMS. But I notice that the UMS wrapper.conf (I have UMS installed as a service) already sets the heap as wrapper.java.maxmemory=768, so that may indeed be the solution for other PMS users with this problem, since UMS seems to be working well for me.

yeah it is, just increase that i use 1728 which for some reason shows 1536 in the log when run which was recommended in the faq for 4+gb systems. its set lower by default because usually it works fine and alot of ppl complain it uses too much memory but if u have 4-8gb its no biggy, i run pms on a proliant n40l microserver with 8gb ram as a service (with 64 bit wrapper) so using 1.5gb is nothing its basically the only thing i run on my server.

wow. UMS resolved all of my PMS issues. I have all the settings cranked up as described and I'm not even close to tapping my server RAM or CPU, plus now I'm getting full DTS audio which I was never able to do before.
