what renderer when not transcoding?

After reading a hundred or so threads and struggling with supressing muxed subs in mkv files I have a question about transcoding.

When PS3 Media Server is NOT transcoding what process is rendering the video stream?

My primary issue is that I cannot stop muxed subs (embedded srt files) from displaying unless I force transcoding and check the "Definitely disable subtitles" box.
I can re-mux my subs so that when the file is played on my computer (with Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic or VLC Media Player)subs are not shown by default but as soon as it is played over PS3 Media Server the subs are always shown.

Another very minor issue I'm curious about is muxed cover art. It appears that PS3 Media Server does not support muxed cover art in mkv files. Is that a correct conclusion?
