Optimized 720p .m2ts stream settings

Postby Triplefun » Wed Apr 01, 2009 7:26 pm

I am running PS3 Mediaserver (1.10.5) on a Windows Home Server (WHS SP2) with an e7200 CPU, 2GB RAM and 1Gb LAN

I have set quailty to 'highest quality' although my screen is only 720p

When I stream .m2ts files I get stuttering whenever the bandwidth exceeds 80Mb/sec. I have observed speeds > 300Mb/sec so don't think this is a network limitation.

My CPU seems to be 'peaking' at 70% which I think is the problem. I have tried a number of encoder options without no notieable change. If I pause the movie for 20 seconds and then hit play it runs for about 15 seconds then starts stuttering again.

I also tried running PS3 Mediaserver from my Vista PC which is a Q6600. The streaming was slightly better although I noticed stuttering above 100Mb/sec.

Please could you advise me on the optimised quality settings. Alternatively should I upgrade to a faster CPU eg. e8600.

Thanks for a wonderful program.

Problem will be solved with a gigabit lan network.

m2ts are not transcoded, so if it's stuttering on a gigabit, I guess you have a problem with your network

Which ethernet cable are you using? Cat5 is stuck at 100mbps, and Cat5e maxes out a little above 300mpbs.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Cat 6 cabling throughout; transcoding is required in most instances to extract the audio; definately not the network - seeing 300Mb/sec or higher prior to stuttering.

Finally replaced the e7200 with an e8600 and everything now hums. Note I also tried running PS3 Media Player from my Vista PC (Q6600) and had the same problem as the e7200.
