[Solved] 720p: Video ok, sound stuttering

Postby timmi » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:11 pm

The following isn't actual anymore, I've moved (for testing purpose) to a more powerful notebook, I can now play (nearly) every 720p-mkv I want to (except 1 I think).

Hi guys,

the subject says everything.

I've got a relatively slow notebook on which PSM is running, but other HD movies (not all, but some) doesn't have this problem...
is it a defect of the *.mkv file or is it my Centrino baby?

If it would be my notebook, then both would stutter (video + audio) and the buffer would be nearly empty, but this isn't the case...

Any ideas?

Greets

More details:

o it's NOT stuttering all the time, only sequences of 1 to 5 minutes and always the same sequences
o the transcoding buffer of TPS3MS is full
o audio codec is AC3
o there are 2 audio lines: ger/eng -> it just happens with the german one

Now you'd say: "Okay, it's a broken audio line." - BUT:

o if I play the *.mkv directly on my notebook, everything is fine, no stuttering - even with the german audio line

Is it anyway an issue of the *.mkv file?

You may be hitting some bandwidth spikes, as the scenes were the stuttering is occurring are appropriate for that (lots of changes).
Are you connected at 100Mbps?
If you can't connect at 1Gbps, try limiting the bandwidth.

Yes, I'm connected via 100 MBit, how do I limit the bandwidth in the PS3MS and to what values?

Not sure, since I have a different setup. Try something like 90Mbps.
Change it in transcoding settings -> common trancode settings -> Video Quality Settings -> Maximum bandwidth...

I'll give it a try in the afternoon, but could you explain me this theory?

If I can't connect to 1 GBit (more bandwidth than 100 MBit) I should limit my 100 MBit?

I don't understand that. :? :)

It's telling PMS to transcode at a lower bitrate that can fit you network (in your case, something up to 100Mbps).
If the stream produced by PMS has bitrate peaks above 100Mbps you will have stuttering.

Heyyy, thank you guy. You did it! :-)
Everything works great now, I think.

I'll observe this issue and keep you up to date.

Bye!
