PS3 Media Server not playing MKV and FLV

Postby krohm » Tue Apr 03, 2012 6:48 am

I'm sure this has been posted before, but after installing PS3 Media Server, then installed Haali Media Splitter so use that as the encoder, it still doesn't playback MKV or FLV's... what am I missing here, sick of reencoding, just want everything to play cleanly...

I don't see why posting my computer specs and how this runs will have any bearing on this problem as it is a blanket problem that mkv's and flv's do not play with ps3 media server. This is a common problem experienced by everyone, nothing to do with my system. Regardless, below is requested information.

1- Duel Core 3ghz, 4gb ram, Win 8 x64
PS3 Media Server 1.52.0 and Java 7

2- PS3

3- CAT5 100mb via Linksys Router

4- MEncoder and/or AviSynth/MEncoder (Installed AviSynth and Haali Media Splitter)

5- MKV and FLV are not working

This is a clean windows 8 install and a clean ps3 media server install.

FLV and MKV have never worked on clean installs of PS3 media server. Why can't you reply to how this can be resolved?

I'm sure every single person ever has this problem, surely there must be some common issue on why mkv's and flv's don't work. How can this be resolved?

No it's not. Not by me, and several hundreds or thousands that have it running. You gave NO info in your first post......like PMS version, or what engine you tried using. Yet you expect people to come up with answers with no details.

OK. Good luck.

So FLV and MKV work on ps3 media server right out the box?

Never has for me.

Which is what I was posting about. No need for the attitude I've provided the PMS version, transcoder engine and other requested info above....

That's a much different statement than ...........

This is a common problem experienced by everyone, nothing to do with my system.

You are spreading misinformation, and when I correct you, it's attitude.

P.S. You still didn't post your debug info.

To note, that support post also describes how to get the MediaInfo, which will help in addition to the debug.log.

As for some of the items in this thread:
  • Installing Haali alone won't do anything. You'll need install AviSynth to use any of your system codecs, and using AviSynth is not recommended since we're getting more reliable and up-to-date MPlayer/MEncoder builds from Subjunk.
  • The PS3 doesn't support FLVs or MKVs, so you'll need some form of remuxing/transcoding.
  • Saying "doesn't playback MKV or FLV's" doesn't really mean much. Specific error messages or actually describing the playback (stuttering, asynch, etc)
  • MKVs are one of the more popular container types on this forum, and typically the playback success rate is high (there are a couple known cases that require tweaking, which can be identified when you post the remainder of the required information).
  • FLVs are a bit more hit or miss. The success rate depends on the media within the FLV container (again, post the remainder of the required information).

i installed haali and avisynth and run that as the preferred encoder, whether mencoder or mencoder/avisynth mkv's dont playback.

data corruped error is most common, which is the standard error from flvs aswell.

from the traces log,
INFO 2012-04-04 19:15:26.581 [StartPlaying Event] renderer: 192.168.1.104, file: D:\File Name.mkv
INFO 2012-04-04 19:16:00.672 [StopPlaying Event] renderer: 192.168.1.104, file: D:\File Name.mkv

just gave a data corrupted error.

attached is the media info:

the other mkv, i demuxed, reencoded the dts to ac3 with eac3to (which is what i do to get blurays running), then remuxed the h264 and ac3 to m2ts container with tsmuxer and it still didn't work. no error this time, just a blank screen playing with no picture though, was playing the audio..

i checked the debug.txt and it hasnt even registered anything from today's date. traces log above.

so some mkv's will work now it seems, previous versions i had issues with all of them. but yeah still getting data corrupted error with some mkv's as listed above.

any further feedback on what should/can be done appreciated....

cheers aul

Post the text output from MediaInfo. Go to the "View" menu and select the Text option.
If the debug.log isn't updating, reinstall PMS with Run as Administrator on the installer. You need to post the full debug.log once it's up-to-date.

As for the specific screenshot there, I can see a couple issues already: non-standard width/height and possibly reference frames or framerate.
