PS3 Media Server

I have a PS3 and a PC in a different rooms, I have a wireless router connected to the PC by an ethernet cable. I have a 4.37Gb video file in Matroska format that I would like to watch on my HDTV through my PS3.

I have downloaded PS3 Media Server, and it comes up with:
"PS3 has not been found. Is it on? You can also check traces and/or configuration, or also the debug.log file"

I rarely use my PS3 for anything other than blu-rays, so any guidance on what I need to do now would be appreciated.

You need to configure wlan settings in PS3. You need at least SSID. If you are using encryption (I hope you do) you need to configure that too.

I've had the PS3 working on the internet for updates and stuff, so it is working through the router?

I've just turned Media Server on, it was disabled. I remember doing this because I had problems with my PS3 freezing, and someone thought it might help as I wasn't using it.

I've always had problems with my PS3 wireless connection, it was why I gave up on playing games online. It seems to still be a thorn in my side. Does anyone have any ideas why my internet connects occasionally on my PS3, and is very unstable?

I have it working now, would running my PS3 connection off an ethernet cable make it more stable?

Wired connection is always recommended over wireless, both for speed and stability.

what type of cable would i need? i've read something about UTP and FTP, does it matter? the cable length i would probably require is 20 metres.

CAT 5 will work fine, mine is 50 feet long.

how long is too long? is their a point where signal strength starts to become an issue. Basically i'm now looking at a 30m (98ft) cable on eBay, would I have problems with this or should it be more than adequte for my needs?
