File will never play first attempt [Info and logs]

Postby Paradox » Sun May 06, 2012 1:08 am

I've had this issue since I began using PS3MS something like 2 years ago now.
I use it with my Sony Bravia EX TV

I run a file, it seems to load, the log looks fine, file finishes loading and then the screen is just black - nothing happens - the progress bar keeps moving as if it's playing though, and the application seems to think the file is playing fine aswell.

To get it to work, I have to close the playing file, and go back 1 directory before the file, then go back into the dir with the file and play it again - it will then play fine, and even start from the point where the previous attempt was up to while it was 'playing' under a black screen.
Simply closing the file and trying to play it again without first moving back 1 directory will result in the same black screen.

This happens with any video (i've played hundreds of them over the past 2 years), and happens 100% of the time without fail.
I have to repeat the process for each individual file I want to play during the same instance of PS3MS.

There are no errors or anything out of the ordinary in the log in PS3MS when this happens, as far as PS3MS is concerned everything seems to be fine.

What can I do to help this get fixed?

EDIT: I added all the info I could and some log files to my last post.

You are not alone with this issue, like this post.
I guess the order of the files, is not correct the first time the folder is loaded.

On my blu-ray player the #Transcode# folder moved from under the first media file to the top of the directory if the folder is reloaded.
The first media file can only be played after the reload.

Also with me, no error given in the debug.log file.

Improves it if you tick "Hide #Transcode# Folder" in the "Navigation/Share" tab?

This seemed to be fixed for me in the previous version, but now in 1.60.0 it is back and I have to retreat back a directory after selecting a file to play in order to get it to run again. What happened, guys? I thought you nailed this bug.

It's kind of hard to fix a bug without the proper details - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=496
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum.

If you are certain you are reporting a new problem, please provide the following information in your post:
^ well since I didn't think it was a new problem I didn't think this applied but here is all the info I can give you.

Specs: Win7 Ult x64, i5 2500k CPU, HD6950 GPU, P8P67 Pro Mobo, 128GB SDD
Streaming to a, as said, Bravia EX TV (32") [ Sony Bravia KDL32EX503U ] Using PMS 1.60.0

My network is like this (all wired):
PC -> Switch -> Router (Linksys WRT45GL w/Tomato Firmware v1.28.1816 and setup well (any specific router setting questions?) )
The TV is connected to the switch via ethernet.
Switch is just a basic Linksys 5 10/100 5 port ethernet switch.

Engine using, well right now MEncoder, but i've tried the others in the past and it's the same deal.
This is the trace file of me attempting to play a video file, failing, going back and trying again, failing, then going back a directory, back INTO the files directory, and then having it finally play.

And this is the debug.log from this session aswell.

Contents of my PMS.conf don't know how useful that will be.

This occurs on pretty much any file type, .avi, .mp4, .mkv, any movie or TV show.

Hope some of this is useful in narrowing down the problem.

Not sure on the policy of bumping topics but it's been a couple days and this is almost off the front page - hope a developer can see my info and take a look at the bug.

I don't see any differences between playback attempts in debug.log aside from initial timestamp. Problem seems to be renderer dependent.

As in my TV is the problem or it's one of the renderer engines like MEncoder?

Edit: I played around with the various engines again, and it looks like I have to recount my last statement as the files seem to play fine first time using tsMuxer, but not with MEncoder (exact same files) this is after changing the order of preferred engines, testing, saving and reloading PS3MS entirely.

So now my question is what is the downside to using tsMuxer as opposed to MEncoder? aside from seemingly losing all subtitle ability options and well, all the other options like "Use multiple cores" etc, will tsMuxer not do any of that? What is the difference?
