Start PMS from XMB

Would it be possible to start up PMS from the PS3's XMB? I'm guessing not...

No, and it's unlikely that will ever be possible. If you are on Windows install PMS as a service and it will always be running when your PC is on.

PMS uses barely any resources when it's idle... Why not leave it on all the time?
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

I installed PMS on a computer of mine that I also use as a web server. I've not got it up and running yet but I'm writing a web script in php to launch PMS. This would allow you to open PMS from the PS3's web browser but the only problem is you would need to have a webserver installed on your PC to make it work. Not exactly the feature that you're looking for but would allow you to lauch PMS without leaving the couch ;)

I'll post back here when I get it done.

Are a lot of people interested in having this ability? I ask because it would be quite easy to write a small program that could sit in the Windows system tray or run as a service that launches PS3MS when the PS3 is powered on. No need to have a web server running on the computer. The PS3 registers with a multi-cast group during boot-up. All that is needed is for a small app to listen for the network broadcast from the PS3 and wait a few seconds, then spawn a process for PS3MS.

What about Linux and OSX users...? Let's keep things as uniformly multiplatform as possible please.

I'm sure it could be done just as easily in Java, however, I would only be able to do it in C# or VB. I guess with Mono it could be ported to Linux.

The thing is, you still need to have an app running, so why not leave PMS itself running?

Because PMS + JVM uses up memory while it's not serving content.
