Need suggestions/advices to complete .DEB packaging

Postby paissad » Fri Feb 12, 2010 12:55 pm

Hi all,
i'm packaging this great software for debian/ubuntu ..
but i need some suggestions/advices to complete the work ...
You may take a look at this topic.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5589
Btw, i would like to create an icon for the software ... i just don't know what image to choose :?...
i took a loot at resources/ directory and i thought about the ps3 console image (ps3.png) .. but knowing that there are some other users (xbox etc ..) i'm confused ..
i would be really glad if the upstream developer contacts me.
I'm open to any suggestions

Thanks,
Best regards,

I though the one on google code was the "official" logo?

Image

Seems pretty decent to me - I mean, a "play" icon says it all, really :)

Re: Need suggestions/advices to complete .DEB packaging

Hi all,
debian/ubuntu mentors or developers told me that i have to take a look here http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver ... server/lib , knowing that some of that .jar or .zip files don't have the source code available in the source code of ps3mediaserver ^^ ....
Indeed, only packages whose source codes are available are admitted for being uploaded ... that's why i packaged tsMuxeR in another package ( it's a freeware, but his source code is not available :()
So i have to do a lot of work again to split the package ( actually each software must have it's own package, that's what Debian/Ubuntu policies require) ... because each software has it's own license/copyright ....
And also, some .jar or .zip files needed for ps3mediaserver are maybe already available in debian repositories ... then it would be a loss of space disk and bandwith for managing the package in debian/ubuntu repositories and even for the simple user :(
Debian/Ubuntu developers told me what i did until now is a good start ...
I hope i have been clear enough

The work is a little far to be done then
I also would be glad if skilled people about java programming can give help, specially shagrath
Btw, i don't receive so much feedbacks or bug reports, i hope everyone is glad about the packaging too.

1st of all, i would like to know ALL the .jar or .zip that are not needed for Linux (even if there are originally built) ....
2nd -> i searched the web, and it seems that nsis, nsisant.jar, jna.jar, are only needed for a targeted build for windows ... so if i understand correctly ... i don't need to include that stuffs in linux build
Where are upstream developers ?
Please,

i prepared a 1st view of the situation, actually there are some packages which are not available in ubuntu repositories, thus it's not possible for the moment to split the package in order to respect Debian/Ubuntu policy ...
TO REMOVE FROM BUILD

nsis, nsisant.jar, jna.jar,

---------------------
TO ADD ( ALREADY AVAILABLE IN UBUNTU REPOSITORIES )

libnetty-java (dispo)
libjdom1-java (dispo)
libjgoodies-looks-java (dispo)
libjaudiotagger-java (dispo)
libhamcrest-java (dispo)
libjgoodies-forms-java (dispo)
libcommons-logging-java (dispo)
libcommons-lang-java (dispo)
libcommons-io-java (dispo)
libcommons-httpclient-java (dispo)
libcommons-configuration-java (dispo)
libcommons-collections3-java (dispo)
libcommons-codec-java (dispo)
bsh (dispo)

------------------------------
NEED PACKAGING ( NOT YET AVAILABLE IN UBUNTU REPOSITORIES )

mediautil - http://mediachest.sourceforge.net/mediautil/
h2 - http://www.h2database.com/html/main.html
rome - https://rome.dev.java.net/
cuelib - http://code.google.com/p/cuelib/
java-unrar - http://sourceforge.net/projects/java-unrar/files/

We have to wait for these 5 packages to be available in ubuntu before continuing ... :(
I start my internship this week mates, i have to focus on my studies a little, i think i may be absent for a while, ... but i will continue to release updates in my personal repositories
Do not hesistate to submit your suggestions, feedbacks, bug-reports, etc ...

Good effort.

Thanks for doing this - as I've said before, it is vital to round out the rough corners of a tool like this to gain mainstream support. I'm sure your work is appreciated by the debian users around here, even if no-one else has said so...

Keep documenting your work here too, so if you have to change your priorities (;)) someone else might pick up your hard work.

I will keep documentin g my work here,
BTW, normally retreiving the source following this command should be enough to know what's going on
apt-get source pms-linux

All the work stuff for the packaging is in the pms-linux-$VERSION/debian/ directory ...
I 'll try to give further informatios too.
