Thanks for providing this repository, its great to not have to install it manually. I've encountered the following problems on Ubuntu Server 10.04 which you could perhaps address:

1. When running the gui (via /usr/bin/pms-linux ) everything is broken because the script does not chdir correctly. The second last line should be
Code: Select all
chdir /usr/share/pms-linux

2. If I run /usr/bin/pms-linux as my unprivileged user, I see the error "Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine.". This goes away if I run pms-linux with sudo. I have 1GB of RAM, this is what top says:
Mem: 1026016k total, 428492k used, 597524k free, 17208k buffers
Swap: 3036244k total, 1164k used, 3035080k free, 333164k cached

3. As some other people have commented, the right codecs are not installed to allow mkv's to be processed. This can be fixed with:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libav.*extra.*

Re: .DEB package available for Debian/Ubuntu

I had been previously using a bog standard download-and-run version of PMS (latest Ubuntu build from the forum) for some time without any problems until this evening when everything decided to stop so, seeing this thread, through I'd purge everything vaguely PMS related and start again.

This is on Ubuntu Lucid. Followed the instructions on here and hit the problems with FLV playback. Found note about installing the extra codecs, done. Still no joy. Found a script (http://code.google.com/p/x264-ffmpeg-up-to-date/) to compile my own FFMpeg and X264 to see if that was the problem, still no joy.

Anyone got an idea what I might be doing wrong? The log is as follows (can't see anything bad in here?):

Code: Select all

@ NathanOsullivan:
the "chdir" command is not a native command in linux ( at least not in Ubuntu ..)
Moreover, the script /usr/bin/pms-linux/ if you're running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx ... except you did some kind of drastic changes in your system that makes it quite different from the native one ..
if i were you, i would check the system ...
Btw, are you sure that installing libav*extra* does fix .mkv issues ?
if you confirm .. i will try to change my automatic script and then update the 1st post (tuto) in order to make people have the necessary at 1st install ;)

@ andybee
what's your real problem mate ?

Overnight playback of MKV files has stopped working. I see a grey thumbnail in the video selection list and when I hit play, the PlayStation seems to think it's playing but nothing is actually happening (no audio, blank screen.) Logs as above don't seem to indicate any problems.

To check I wasn't going insane tonight I built a clean VM of Ubuntu 10.04, put the latest "build" of PMS from the forums on it. Install mplayer, VLC, mencoder. Compiled from SVN ffmpeg and x264. This fixes the thumbnails not loading, but still have the same problem with playback.

It's not the source file either as other files which used to work fine have also stopped. I'm trying to work out what in my setup has changed to cause this problem.

Finally, got it working again after a lot of tinkering on a clean VM install. I'll post a separate thread on my findings on getting PMS running on a clean Lucid install if anyone is interested?

Paissad - question for you - do you have an init script that runs as non-root?

@Paissad.

Thank you for the info. There was another script on this site that did - I'll have to see what I may be able to hack together.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=902&start=0&hilit=debian+init

I also wanted to say thank you for putting all this together. It's worked like a charm.

I literally tried to read through all of the posts but couldnt do it, the server when first started "it runs perfectly" after its turned off and than used again at a later date, it doesn't recognize my ps3 or xbox360, it reports "unknown Renderer" with a huge "yield logo" and it doubles up my video lists like the guy on the first page or so.

would like some help if not, its cool, thanks for having this site around :) ill go back to the 10.0 version of pms-linus for now
