Based on the information from Majito I think you can forget any HD-transcoding on any of them. Infact I dont think you will get transcoding of DVD-size video either.
The CPU should be good enough to handle audio-transcoding (flac, aac, ogg) to PCM.

The 64MB memory on the DNS-323 is very limiting, you probably want to retain the normal functionality of the device while adding PMS and that does not leave much space for java.

128MB on the other systems feels a little better but its not much to play with either.

Hi,

Mine is a Synology DS209+ with 800MHz CPU and 512MB RAM. I assume that should be enough for PMS.

Though I tried to follow the ongoing conversation between You guys, it is still unclear to me whether I could install PMS on my DS-209+ and how could I do that?
What packages do You think I should install, in which order?

To be honest, the built-in Synology Media Server lacks some compatibility with my PS3, not to mention its strangely slow indexing/reindexing capabilities.

Thank You!

Arthur

The DS209 should have enough punch to use a lot of PMS features. At least in theory.

Start with a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) that is compatible with Sun's Java SE 1.6
Next step would be to install "ffmpeg" which PMS uses to inspect media-files.

Hi guys, just a quick update.

I tried the new version 1.10.1 (thanks shagrath, great job :D ).

'gconfpeer not found' message has disappeared ;)

This is what I get when I type ./PMS.sh now:

Now I wonder what '2 more' means .... we're almost there? ;)

P.S. I had already installed ffmpeg through ipkg.
According to the README I also compiled and installed Mplayer/Mencoder (1.0rc1-3.4.3) from svn.
(it takes forever to compile and comes with lots of warnings).
Even downloaded and unpacked the binary codec packages from the Mplayer website.

cause you are running in Java1.5, and not 1.6
you should build yourself a compatible 1.5 release, with the OSX ant script

Thanks for looking into it shagrath, I'll see if I can get Java 1.6 into the NAS.
BTW. ....OSX ant script....this is the Linux board ;)

I am in the same boat as others and hoping one day the PMS can run on DNS-323.
With the latest DTS Streaming working in 1.10, there is no needs to transcode anything for me. Even if I need to transcode some of the files (e.g. RMVB etc... not natively support by PS3), I can always setup another instance of PMS on a PC that will be used for transcoding.

Hey Atrem -- are you still using JamVM to run the pms.jar?

I just started messing around with my Linkstation Mini, and tried to run pms.jar using jamvm (tried 1.5.1 stable and 1.5.2 unstable), but ran into some errors.
Not sure what they mean, but maybe someone can help?

I did, but it's java 1.5 and PMS requires 1.6.
I gave up on trying to build 1.6 into my NAS, it's way too complicated for me. OpenJDK needs ant, ant needs Java, etc.
I'll wait for the ipkg  .
