The simple truth is that this sort of thing is the result of Linux's distributed and modular development culture, not just PS3mediaserver. The philosophy of letting different components do one thing well, and development by multiple and (often) uncoordinated teams means breakages and regressions. My playback issues were being caused by libav, a fork of ffmpeg, because PMS couldn't find "ffmpeg" in that environment. And because my solution for the audio (which is still working very well for me) doesn't identify what component is being used to transcode the audio, it's a bit of a cipher. If it breaks, I won't know what to do either, and I'll end up using Plex as well. Still, I prefer how PMS handles audio files (when it works), and I like my audiobooks, so there's that. Weirdly, this issue never effected my pure audio files, only video files. That may explain the difference in our experiences.

understood -- I hope I didn't sound complaining. it's almost a shame that PMS worked so well as a Java app, because I'm sure if it had been developed natively for Linux it could have been forked to meet the demands of Ubuntu.

Plex isn't bad, so far -- though I can't fast forward through movies (least I couldn't the other night) it seems to handle FLAC pretty well. has anyone played with other media servers under Ubuntu?

I found a better solution ... it works like a charm.

The Ubuntu packages do not support all required formats.
Use these instructions to install mplayer, mencoder, ffmpeg, flvtool2, faststart, qt-faststart:

http://www.vimp.com/en/web/faq-installa ... -1404.html

The new link for flvtool2 is :
wget https://ffmpeg-install-centos.googlecod ... -1.0.6.tgz

I'm eager to try these out. however, before I start: can someone tell me which of these commands require root permissions, and which do not? though I'm not a Linux newbie, I don't often compile; and while I understand that a lot of the commands listed in this how-to -- which looks really helpful and promising -- do NOT need to be from root, many of them do. okay, obviously apt-get update and presumably editing ld.so.conf, but -- & honestly, I've never known this -- what about make and compile and configure? I hate to be dumb, but this guide would be a hundred times better if the author had made clear exactly when I should be root.

or should I just su all of them?
