Atom 330 dual core - transcoding?

Postby flammenwurfer » Thu Apr 30, 2009 5:44 pm

I'm considering replacing my super loud and huge box that's running PS3 Media Server with a small quiet box running an Atom 330 dual core processor. Would an atom 330 with 1-2GB RAM be able to successfully transcode hd mkvs? I would be happy if it would at least transcode 720p mkvs, 1080p isn't absolutely necessary. I would sacrifice that for the smaller unit and silence.

My current box is an AMD Athlon 64 1.8 Ghz (single-core) with 1GB Ram and a Geforce 6600GT. It has no problems transcoding any mkv/hd video files.

One more thing. The box that I am considering has a PCI slot. If the system couldn't handle the transcoding, would adding a pci videocard help? If not, does anybody else have any suggestions on a somewhat small and more importantly quite and cheap box that would do what I want? It would be amazing if the atom 330 could handle this because the box I'm looking at only costs $130.

I found this article (http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/Configurations/MSI-Wind-Nettop-D130.html) reviewing the MSI Wind nettop with the atom 330 in it. This is the part that most interested me....

When it comes to multimedia performances this configuration is enough for almost all content except for 1080p videos. We tested 720p video that was played without any problems and with CPU at 30% usage. Lower 1080p videos with lower bitrate can be played without chopping (drops) but full 1080p video is almost unwatchable.

If it can play 720p video without any problems at 30% cpu usage, would that translate to it being able to transcode a 720p video (mkv) for play on the PS3?

I found this thread http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... 42658.html

The 3rd post from Sushi_x47 says he had no problem with 720p video but there was stuttering with 1080p MKV files using MEncoder but that the 1080p files work OK using tsmuxer .

Hope that's some help.

Very interesting. Thanks matchstick.

Sounds like it can handle what I want it to. It's very tempting. This Foxconn R10-S4 box would be perfect to replace my huge noisy spare computer that's serving as my media server at the moment. It has the dual core atom 330 and it's only $129 from newegg. Adding 2GB of ram and using my existing hard drives I could make a pretty sweet small and quiet and energy efficient media server for $155! Tell me that's not tempting.

Glad to be of help.
I've just ordered an Atom 330 based server myself (sadly that Foxconn box doesn't seem available on this side of the Atlantic ;)) so I'm hoping the transcoding performance will turn out to be as good as promised :)

That's sweet Matchstick. If you don't mind, I'd love to hear how it works for you once you get it up and running. Also, which one did you order?

My wife has insisted the server needs to be as quiet as possible so I've gone for one of these

I've ordered it without Windows Home Server as I really wants something more general purpose and I have plenty of Windows XP Licenses from old boxes.

That's a pretty slick looking box. Hope you enjoy it.

Will you be streaming any hd content to your PS3 with it?

Most of what I have at the moment is SD but I will be trying it with some HD content.
Not entirely how the Wireless network connection to the PS3 will handle full HD though ;) (If it's a problem I Might end up switching to Homeplug)
