Why is the media library so slow?

I have a very large music library, about 15000 songs in FLAC and MP3 format. In Winamp I can build this media library with about a minute. In PMS it takes many many hours. Is that normal or is something wrong? Also when my media library is enabled it takes much longer to bring up file listing on the PS3. It lists a few songs, then hangs..then lists a few more. I'm assuming this is again due to slow access to the media library?
