I've successfully had ps3mediaserver stream a dts encodec mkv to my ps3 while getting the receiver on my Logitech speakers to display "DTS". I understand this is possible because ps3mediaserver "tricks" the PS3 (AND my TV, it can't pass dts via toslink) into thinking it's a LPCM 2.0 stream and thus the PS3 and my TV happily passes it on until it reaches my speaker system.
My question is if it's possible to achieve the same thing outside ps3mediaserver. I want to use VLC/WMP/PowerDVD whatever makes it possible, to "trick" my TV into passing either a DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 Stream to my receiver (from PC over HDMI to TV over toslink to receiver). Can anybody see if this would be possible somehow?
System setup:
PC -- [ethernet] --> ps3 -- [hdmi] --> TV -- toslink --> logitech z5500 speakers
AND the PC is also connected to TV via HDMI.
