Result
Only used PSM to play direct DVD ISO's stored on server (so far).
Probably won't try HD playback as the Media Portal PC can do the transcode in hardware.
Still thinking about were to go next...

I can now add another configuration to my testing:


CPU: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3GHz
MOBO: MSI G31M3-F
RAM: 4GB DDR @ 800
OS: Windows Server 2008 (running as workstation)
NETWORK: Gigabit
PMS: 1.04 using Menconder HT only
RESULTS: Plays everything flawlessly including the Killer and Bunny 1080P, buffer continuously increases

Tranquil SQA-5H with WHS - Intel Atom 330, Gigabit to Belkin AP, Wireless G to PS3

One of the 4 cores runs at about 60% while the others run at 25%

PMS installed as a service.

SD DVD iso's play fine, very good quality, MPEG2 from encoded home video works well. SD H.264 stored on server from Samsung camcorder stutter from the word go, via transcoding I get about 10 seconds before stutter sets in and then unwatchable.

Edited to add that if I pause at the beginning of a transcoding session for about 30 seconds the file is completely watchable that time and then for the remainder of the time if I decide to view the same file again. When I watch it again it plays fine without having to delay. Move to a new file and a healthy dollop of pause is needed. Transcoding buffer never drains.

Great application, would love to get the samsung H.264 problem sorted
