minimum cpu for transcoding 1080p

Postby pier » Sat Jul 16, 2011 3:37 am

So I want to build a NAS server and Media Server with the Free NAS linux distro.

I've been considering using an intel Atom motherboard with everything integrated, but I'm not sure if it will be enough to handle 1080p.

Right now the best contender is the Intel D510MO with a gigabit integrated board. It has 2 cores running at 1.66 and can handle 4 threads. Would that be enough? If not... what should I be aiming for?

TIA

Have you checked Gigabyte Atom D525?, i got one, and it does a pretty good job.
As i always use subtitles, i transcode with mencoder.

Transocding performance can vary alot, depending on the file and complexity of images.
Still i would say it can transcode any ordinary 720p/30fps.

Another thing is; i HAVE to keep my stream below 40mb/s cause that's what my TV can pull, so that requires even more of my CPU.

So..my guess is if youre transcoding using tsmuxer to a ps3, YES, then you'd be able to transcode most 1080p (24/25/30 fps)..
If you're planning on using mencoder, then no..
