xbox360 - SD video choppy, ps3 steaming works fine

Postby Lavan » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:55 pm

Hello all,

When kinect came out i decided to buy an xbox 360 (the new slim model). I've been using ps3 media server with my ps3 with great results (v 1.10.51). I noticed it also works for my xbox 360 but although everything works fine the video seems less fluent, it's not major stuttering or anything but just like it has a lower framerate.
I've tried the latest beta (v 1.20.412) but no change.

We are talking here about regular SD video (350 mb episodes, divx/xvid mostly). So shouldn't really be a big problem, and as I said streaming the files from the same pc to my ps3 works great. I have gigabit lan and my processor is a core 2 duo. I have the problem both with videos with subtitles and without them.

Are there any settings I should try ? Keep in mind i'd like to continue using both ps3 and xbox 360, so I don't want to change anything that will stop my ps3 from working properly with ps3 media server.

Thanks in advance,

Jorn

I can say that on the beta ( not tested with 1.10.51 yet ) I'm running two different 720 files at the same time one on my 360 the other on my ps3...

There seems to be no problem running 720 at all on one or the other. Although the render for the 360 isn't as clear/detailed (slightly). But very tolerable considering that you couldn't render 720 with any other server.

I should note that when running two or more ps3's at the same time I've never had a problem, serving multiple 720 or 1080 files... But with 1 of each the xbox seems to work fine, the ps3 runs for a bit, sometimes even minutes, then fails. No matter what the type even just lowly xvid's ( mencoder has stopped working popup on pc )

1080 I can confirm that what was posted by another there is stuttering. Eventually mencoder just fails... the fix mentioned isn't really a fix in my eyes.

What's ur cpu ? perhaps there might be trouble with codec's?

I'm core i7 930 on gigabit network.

I've tried a few things around the forums for better 1080 performance and will say that the core avc render through gpu is really a cpu saver ... not sure of overall performance, need to watch more files. Still no luck with xbox 360 1080 files.

But the stopping glitch between the xbox / ps3 seems to happen with which ever once starts a file second fails.

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies.

Let me clarify a bit my situation. I'm not trying to play them at the same time, I'm just saying that streaming the same files to my ps3 has no problem at all, to my xbox 360 (not at the same time) it seems like the framerate is like 17 fps or something (not actually measured but that's how it feels like, not super choppy but not entirely fluent either, audio is fine btw). Also I'm talking about standard definition files here, 624 x 352. My CPU is a E6750, not the greatest but transcoding 720p even to my ps3 runs perfectly with cpu power to spare, so 624 x 352 really shouldn't be a problem for my processor.

So it's probably a setting somewhere, I'm taking PMS doesn't transcode to the same format when streaming to ps3 or xbox360 ?

Thanks,

Jorn

Sorry I couldn't help much Lavan,... I have core i7 930 @ 3.2 ghz ( but my processor is never over 10% when transcoding ) I had no problem sending 720 quality files to the 360... I should note my network is gigabit... but the xbox is 100base/t so i doubt that makes a difference. Is your network wired?

Perhaps you should reinstall codec's or perhaps try a different set. LIke I said on my brother's laptop the coreavc codec allows it to decoded 1080 for playback no prob. ( if you have compatible nvidia card... otherwise don't bother )

Hey, thanks for the attempt in any case :)

In the meantime I've already sold my xbox360 again and will stick with my ps3 (the kinect wasn't as cool as i'd hoped),

thanks again,
